Maharashtra government approves bike taxi policy, mandates 100% electric fleet

In a significant move aimed at boosting urban mobility and sustainable transportation, the Maharashtra government, on Monday, officially approved a policy framework for the operation of bike taxis across the state.

Safety and Inclusivity

Under the newly rolled-out policy, bike taxis will be permitted to operate in all cities within Maharashtra that have a population of one lakh and above. A key highlight of the policy is the mandate that all bike taxis must be fully electric, signalling a push towards eco-friendly transportation solutions.

To ensure safety and inclusivity, the policy lays down several conditions for aggregators. All drivers must be over 20 years of age, and bike taxis will only be allowed to carry one passenger at a time. Additionally, children below the age of 12 will not be permitted to use the service.

In a move aimed at enhancing safety for female passengers, bike taxis must include a separating shield, and the government has set a target to increase the number of female drivers to 50% over time, though no specific timeline has been outlined for this transition.

The state transport department will initially issue 50 permits to eligible aggregators, with each permit being valid for five years. These permits are non-transferable.

Coverage For Riders & Passengers

To improve passenger security and comfort, all bike taxis must be equipped with GPS tracking, an emergency contact facility, and seasonal covers for protection during the monsoon. Aggregators are also required to provide insurance coverage for both riders and passengers in case of accidents or fatalities.

The policy also enforces a maximum travel distance of 15 kms per ride to regulate usage and maintain service standards.

This initiative is expected to enhance last-mile connectivity in urban areas while promoting clean and efficient transportation alternatives.
