This contract covers the purchase of 1000 horsepower engines for the Indian Army’s T-72 tanks, as confirmed by the deal’s terms.
The engines will be delivered in three forms- fully assembled, completely disassembled, and partially assembled, based on the procurement specifics.
The T-72 tanks form a core component of the Indian Army’s armoured units, currently equipped with 780 horsepower engines, per military records. Upgrading to 1000 horsepower engines will increase the tanks’ battlefield speed and combat strength, as stated in a Ministry press release.
Additionally, the deal involves a Transfer of Technology (ToT) from Rosoboronexport to Armoured Vehicles Nigam Limited, a manufacturing facility in Avadi, Chennai, according to the contract details.
This transfer will enable the factory to assemble the engines and eventually produce them locally under license, supporting the “Make in India” program in the defence industry.
